“Mr. Jamnik is one of the most talented young musicians I have met in many years.”
- Gary Burton, vibraphonist and educator
Born in Slovenia in 1993, Vid Jamnik made his first official musical steps at age 8 in the music school in his hometown of Ravne na Koroškem with professor Davorin Jevšnikar.
At age 11, he attended a summer jazz school in Croatia, where he met the legendary Yugoslav vibraphonist Boško Petrović, who immediately took the young musician under his wing. Vid has performed with many renowned musicians and ensembles, including Jimmy Cobb, Georgie Fame, Jim Rotondi, Stefan Milenkovich, Gianni Basso, Dusko Goykovich, Arthur Lipner, the JMI Jazz World Orchestra under the direction of Luis Bonilla, and was a member of the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra 2017.
In 2011/2012, Vid participated in an Erasmus student exchange at the Jazz Institut Berlin with professor David Friedman, and in 2012 graduated in Jazz Studies from the Carinthian State Conservatory in Klagenfurt, Austria. In 2014, he released his debut album Last Minute! on Alessa Records. After taking private lessons with Gary Burton, and on the recommendation of the great vibraphonist, he went on to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. He graduated as a dual-major student in Performance and Jazz Composition in 2018, having studied with Ed Saindon, Terence Blanchard, George Garzone, Kenny Werner, Dave Santoro, Ralph Peterson, Dave Samuels and other jazz greats.
He received Berklee’s Most Active Mallet Performer Award and was selected twice to record for Berklee’s compilation record featuring best student bands and compositions. His quartet Urgent Detergent toured in France on behalf of the college, made it to the finals of the EBU European Jazz Competition in Holland, and took 2nd place in the 7 Virtual Jazz Competition 2019.
In addition to Urgent Detergent, he is currently heading a pioneering project Viva Jazz Forma, fusing sounds of outdoor metal sculptures with jazz, techno and electronic music, thus bridging the visual and musical worlds.
Vid Jamnik is a Balter Mallets Artist.
